WAR OF 1812 / BATTLE OF HAMPTON REENACTMENT |

In March 1813, during the War of 1812, British forces established a blockade of Chesapeake Bay. British forces also attacked Norfolk and the American frigate Constellation,
in an attempt to claim both as war prizes. Three months later, the British launched yet another assault, this time on Craney Island near Portsmouth. However, U.S. sailors and militia forces defending
the island successfully resisted the attack, resulting in one of the few victories in the Chesapeake Campaign during the War of 1812.
In retaliation British forces attacked the town of Hampton - across the harbor from Norfolk – on June 26. American militia forces defending the town fought valiantly, but were eventually forced to
retreat, leaving the invaders to wreak havoc on the town and its inhabitants.
Today, nearly 200 years later, we commemorate the Battle of Hampton by honoring the men who served on both sides during that conflict, just a few miles from the original battle site.
